OPEN LETTER to the American People
Is is long, but then, it is a big nation.
It is a fact that the right of every nation to choose their leaders is their own. They are entitled to their own "privacy". This time, however, it is not the case for American elections. As never before in the history of this planet, the choice that will be made soon in the United States of America matters to the entire World. Here is why.
Americans have a very specific pride about their nationality. Going through airports all around the world, it is clear how proudly they claim to be "American citizens". They have reasons. A very new nation, compared to the world history, put together people from all walks on Earth and managed to take out of them their best abilities for hard work, initiative, imaginations and innovation. They built communities that pushed frontiers in every issue, and pulled out through the past century outstanding results in every field. They are proud of it. It is alright. But there is another aspect of that society that they seem not to see as clearly as they see what makes them proud, a round circle that happens to be very dangerous for them.
Perhaps because the Pilgrims had to start from scratch, the "time is money" motto that engines their life made them focus entirely in making and acquiring money in every possible way in order to - basically for the whole population - get a home, reach for college and secure something that happens to be pivotal in the society character: entertainment. Whether it is Hollywood, the Prime Time, shopping or personal pleasures, they highly grade entertainment in their life. It is all right, they can but it also can set a wall to their surroundings. Their powerful drive also set them all around the world, sometimes to give a hand (chemical weapons), sometimes to defend themselves (Bin Laden) and many other times to launch profitable wars that filled their cemeteries with American youth. Their economy is strong mainly for their own interests, and often sharing interests with others. Their armed forces, communications and technology are big, just the same size of the challenge it implies to use them. Every way has a double end. So the Americans are proud of themselves, some people of the world like it, some people do not, but they have the right to feel it. The point, however, is that this whole "beautiful" picture that makes them proud might be preventing them to see the exemption that this moment in time IS for planet Earth.
The only thing that is permanent on Earth is change. Check history from the caverns to now days just to find a never-ending transformation of ways. What American people should be able to see is that the change taking place at the beginning of this millennium cannot be handled by one single nation, by power, money or pride. The news have the record: floods are already happening in American or British or Asian fields; all phenomenon related to wind and water have doubled their strength; earthquakes have been moving around all continents; diseases are breaking the frontiers of the tropics to conquer both hemispheres; migration and despair are already showing the peak of an iceberg in construction; Humanity´s ways - crops, housing, jobs, technology and, above all, life - is in jeopardy because of one single variable: the heat of the planet. What American - and as a matter in fact every nation - must not think is that it will not touch them. They cannot fail to see that the dangerous ongoing situation will hit their very own way of living and can, very well, break their pride into pieces.
The planet itself does not recognise nationalities, bank accounts, skin color, first or second-class. It is just getting too hot for Human known conditions of life. That simple. That is why the recent Paris Agreement that pulled together all nations of the World is a saving step for Earth. Being the Americans its second polluters, they face a double irony: by keeping focused only in their own wealth, they are contributing to dismantling both the world and their own society. What makes the moment difficult as well as interesting is that it is no longer an American or European or Asian call. It is planet Earth´s call already showing how hard could life be for children and youth in a near future should adults today not act in a responsible way. Again, look into your children and grandchildren´s eyes tonight at dinnertime and think of the planet they will have to live in. Do it.
That is why having a sensible, able, prepared, coherent, worldwide PEOPLE driven mind lead in the United States of America, which usually comes from Democrats, matters and is vital for the rest of the world. This time, American People, is not only about the economy, jobs, health, education, and trade, although Education is just as important to tackle the thread. THIS TIME is about the way of living of your own society and of the entire world. SEVEN BILLION HUMAN LIVES. That is also why, whatever the reasoning and the decision made, it cannot be attached to entertainment. What will happen to Earth is not at all fanny for any living creature in it. Hopes are set in your sense of self worth. If there is something American people have is sense of community, all you have to do now is to extend it to the rest of the World for one single reason: it is the only planet there is. But, should this great nation - filled with human and material riches - fail to see and handle the huge responsibility they have at hand, they should also remember that those who received more will be demanded the most. It is, indeed, an American choice./
