I

There is a saying in Spanish which equivalence I ignore but its translation goes: they do with the hand while erasing with the elbow. That is exactly what some people on Earth are doing these days.

 

ABAJO EN ESPAÑOL

 

One of them are the Russians. A huge land inhabited by people who have truly seen extremes. From czarism to Bolshevik revolution; from fierce Stalinism to the even-tempered perestroika; from the heat of world wars to the so-called cold war. The Russians have been through all that. After Gorvachev´s intelligent move that knocked down not just the wall but also the world´s fear towards them that kept them relatively isolated and economically behind, Russia rejoined the community of nations showing a much more interesting facade. Confrontation was replaced by cooperation and their many contributions to the world are still highlighted. Both, their Bolshevik revolution and their Perestroika created a wave of sympathy all around the world in different and opposing ways. Lenin and Trotsky dragged many generations in various parts of the planet just as Gorvachev was applauded widely in other parts. On the whole, and though opposed, they managed to create a "sympathy capital" all around the world. Being so, their present moves are difficult to understand. Overviewing international law, aggression, invasion do not correspond to either of the previous faces they showed to the world. A waste of "sympathy capital" in a globalized world. Doing with the hand while erasing with the elbow. What is regrettable is that not long ago in the concert of nations they were leading their own way, their own growth, peacefully on the stage of this world´s play.

 

The other people that are doing with the hand while erasing with the elbow are the Jews. There may not be other people on Earth who had received so much sympathy and solidarity from all other peoples. The Holocaust touched every heart and every one was ready to lend a hand. Today, regardless of the motives they have and believe in, Palestine and its horrors has become a huge elbow for Israel´s world sympathy capital. The world is astonished, even Jews outside Israel are, and the Muslim world is finding its limit. What is regrettable in this case is that not so long ago peace was - still is - around the corner for the good of all.

 

Something of the kind is happening to the Muslim world in a different way. Their great strength is the force of a faith that pulls them together to make them Muslims. These days, a small group of war lovers took for themselves the sacred name - Muslim - and it is making it appear to the rest of the world what it is not as a whole. Few people acting in the name of all have become a huge elbow that erases all good deeds in Muslim lands. 

 

At the end of the day it is all related to change. Change is actually taking place on Earth. Leaders of different walks of life are seeing and recognizing the imperative need to hold responsibly their own lives and grow their own peoples riding tough challenges like those created by the warming of the planet, getting hold of the virtues and wisdom of their own history, creating new ways and tools, fresh understanding, a creative vision for their future as nations and as humanity. A Renaissance.  But, as it has always happened in the past, change is feared by those who used to hold the strings that made the world what it was. Just as there are some that understand the new times and use their power to promote and make real good positive change, there are others who fear it and resist it. The way of fear is violence, war, and terrorism. It is the kick that ignorance and fear tries to give to change. Only wise leaders of these changing times will see it clear, refuse to play the game, and hold tight their vision of a good future for their people in order to hold strong their arm, so that that elbows becomes an engine to powerful hands. / Silvia Davila MM, August 23, 2014

 

 

EL CODO Y LA MANO

 

Hay un dicho en Español cuya equivalencia en inglés desconozco pero cuya traducción dice: borran con el codo lo que hacen con la mano. Eso es, exactamente, lo que algunos pueblos están haciendo por estos días. Uno de ellos son los Rusos. Una tierra inmensa habitada por gentes que han visto verdaderos extremos. Del zarismo a la revolucion bolchevique, del feroz stalinismo a la controlada perestroika, del calor de las guerras mundiales a la así llamada guerra fría. Los rusos pasaron por todo eso.

Después del inteligente paso que dio Gorvachov mediante el cual tumbó no solamente el muro sino también el miedo mundial hacia ellos que los mantenía relativamente aislados y economicamente resagados, Rusia volvió a unirse a la comunidad de naciones mostrando una fachada mucho más interesante. El enfrentamiento fue reemplazado por cooperación y sus contribuciones al mundo son reconocidas. Ambas, la revolución bolchevique y la perestroika crearon una ola de simpatía en todo el mundo y en toldas opuestas. Lenin y Trotsky arrastraron a varias generaciones en diversas partes del mundo, de la misma forma en que Gorvachov fue aplaudido en muchas otras. En el conjunto, y aunque opuestas, los rusos consiguieron crear un "capital de simpatía" en todo el mundo. Siendo así, es difícil de comprender sus actuales acciones. Ignorar la ley internacional, la agresión, la invasión no corresponde a ninguna de las dos caras exitosas que mostraron al mundo en el pasado. Un desperdicio del "capital de simpatía" en un mundo globalizado. Borran con el codo lo que hacen con la mano. Lo que es lamentable en términos del conjunto de naciones es que hace no mucho los rusos lideraban su propio crecimiento, a su manera, en paz en el escenario de este mundo.

 

El otro pueblo que está borrando con el codo lo que hace con la mano son los Judios. Quizás no exista otro pueblo en el planeta que haya recibido tanta simpatía y solidaridad como ellos. El Holocausto tocó todos los corazones y todos estuvieron siempre dispuestos a dar una mano. Hoy - independientemente de los motivos que tienen y en los que creen - Gaza y sus horrores se ha convertido en un inmenso codo para el capital de simpatía mundial por los judios. El mundo está estupefacto, inclusive judíos fuera de Israel también los están, y el mundo musulman está encontrando su límite. Lo lamentable aquí es que hace no mucho la paz estaba - aún está - a la vuelta de la esquina para el bien de todos.

 

Algo parecido le está sucediendo al mundo Musulman en otra forma. Su gran fortaleza es una fe que los mantiene unidos y los hace musulmanes. Por estos días, un reducido grupo de amantes de la guerra tomaron el nombre sagrado para sí mismos - musulman - y lo hacen aparecer ante el resto del mundo como algo que no es en su conjunto. Unos pocos actuando con el nombre de todos se ha convertido en otro codo gigante que borra todas las buenas acciones de las tierras musulmanas.

 

Al final del cuentas todo está relacionado con el cambio. Un cambio, de hecho, está sucediendo en la tierra. Líderes de diferentes partes del globo están viendo y reconociendo la imperativa necesidad de sostener con responsabilidad sus propias vidas y crecer a sus gentes, cabalgando sobre retos duros como los producidos por el calentamiento del planeta, aferrandose a la sabiduría y virtudes de su propia historia, creando nuevos caminos y herramientas, una comprensión fresca, una visión creativa de su futuro como naciones y como humanidad. Un renacimiento. Pero, como ha sucedido siempre en el pasado, al cambio le temen aquellos que sostenían las cuerdas del mundo tal como era. Así como hay algunos que entienden los nuevos tiempos y usan su poder para promover y hacer realidad un cambio positivo para todos, hay también quienes lo resisten y le temen. La via del miedo es la violencia, la guerra, el terrorismo. Es la patada que la ignorancia y el miedo pretende dar al cambio. Solamente líderes sabios de estos tiempos de cambio verán con claridad lo que sucede, rehusarán continuar ese juego, y mantendrán con firmeza su visión de un buen futuro para sus pueblos con el fin de mantener fuerte el brazo, de manera que los codos se conviertan en el motor de manos poderosas. / Silvia Davila MM, August 23, 2014
