Es común en el contiente Latinoamericano seguir los eventos de los países individualmente, pocas veces se mira el conjunto, la trayectoria y las tendencias del continente como tal. Toda vez que América Latina ha sido gobernada por extremos, bien sea de derecha o de izquierda, los países han visto estancamiento de su economía, o su crecimiento social, o sus libertades y derechos. Ambos extremos han arrinconado a las naciones.

 

La extrema derecha ha manejado una formula que, sustentada en la ignorancia casi masiva de la región, instila temores irracionales que todos dan por ciertos. Uno de los ejemplos más claros de esto es la famosa frase que dice que "si se aumentan los salarios se desploma el empleo", lo cual quiere decir que manejan un sistema que solamente funciona si los pobres siguen pobres. Sin embargo, todos la aceptan y la repiten. El Comunismo en las pasadas décadas y el terrorismo en las presentes, son banderas que implementadas por la extrema derecha producen exactamente lo que pretenden perseguir: propuestas sociales que difieran de las suyas, y un terror que se retroalimenta a sí mismo para beneficio - unicamente - de quienes viven de la guerra y de la producción de armamento. La extrema derecha en el continente - la historia tiene los records - ha producido en todos los paises latinoamericanos sociedades de contraste visible: pocos con todo y la mayoría con apenas. 

 

La extrema izquierda, por su parte, ha generado un fenómeno parecido en el continente pero del otro lado del espejo. La gama es variada: desde la revolución Cubana con enfrentamiento armado, pasando por los movimientos que vencieron a las dictaduras, hasta casos anacrónicos como el de Venezuela. La izquierda en América Latina ha tenido el motivo y la intención de hacer sociedades más equitativas pero les ha faltado la fórmula. Un discurso, la mayoría de las veces populista, construído de necesidades y derechos sentidos por todos, ha estado excento del conocimiento y la capacidad profesional, administrativa, política y diplomática para avanzar con éxito en un mundo de corrientes enfrentadas. El resultado ha sido conflicto, aislamiento, estancamiento o, a lo sumo, desinterés por parte del resto del mundo. Aquí también la historia tiene los records. Uno de los pocos casos de una tendencia progresista que ha mostrado habilidad política y capacidad administrativa es Brasil, quizás también Chile, que de hecho levantaron los indices de las variables básicas en sus países y entraron a jugar en el tablero global. La tragedia, sin embargo, de todos los gobiernos - de derecha, centro e izquierda - del continente ha sido y sigue siendo la corrupción masiva, a todos los niveles que se da en igual medida en todas las tendencias políticas. Los casos de corrupción recientes no están descubriendo el agua. El agua corrupta ha corrido por todos los países sistemáticamente. Eso también está en los records.

 

Pero en este momento del mundo en el que la extrema derecha del mundo... está aplicando todos sus recursos - la formula - cuyos resultados el continente ha vivivo en carne propia, América Latina tiene que haber crecido y ser capaz de ver su realidad continental de una manera más sabia. Debe encontrar un Centro con visión global, un centro profesional, capacitado, libre de discursos antiguos y cargado de hombres y mujeres profesionales capaces de actuar por el continente con acciones conectadas a la contundente realidad del mundo de hoy. En el mundo estamos. Dejarse arrastrar por el terror de la extrema derecha que busca suprimir gobiernos progresistas, o hacer alianzas sesgadas que generan enfentamientos, o caer de nuevo en el populismo beligerante de la izquierda sin contenido práctico de progreso, solo la llevaría a la América Latina a repetir su historia o, a lo sumo, a mantener una inercia de estancamiento que se resiste al cambio. 

 

En esta nueva era, y en este momento en el que surgen nuevas figuras en el continente, los viejos términos de "izquierda" y "derecha" usados también para justificar atropellos de ambos lados, pierden todo el sentido cuando el continente necesita identificar líderes - de pensamientos distintos sí - pero comprometidos con la meta conjunta de poner los pies en La Tierra como continente. Latinoamérica debe recoger, sostener y apoyar a sus mejores líderes - hombres y mujeres - de todos los países y, respetando divergencias, apoyarlos y pedirles que, de una vez por todas, dejen la pendejada extremista y las definiciones antiguas y formen un frente unido, variado en pensamiento si, pero que conforme un Centro verdadero en el que quepan todos los habitantes de estas tierras. América Latina tiene que construir ya una Visión Única y Propia inmune al manoseo de intereses extremos y ajenos. Una visión del continente para el continente que, como tal, sería sólido en Las Américas, esa tierra que va desde Canadá hasta La Patagonia cargada de recursos, ideas, tecnología, y de gentes unidas por un sentimiento que trasciende border limítrofes, nacionalidades o idiomas: el deseo, la capacidad y la certeza de poder hacer un mundo justo y propio. Latin America: If not now, when?

 

It is common in the Latin American continent to follow nation´s events individually; seldom there is a panoramic view of it, its trajectory and tendencies. Every time Latin America has been ruled by extremes - from left or right - nations have seen stagnation of their economies, or of their social development, or of their liberties and rights. Both extremes have cornered nations. 

 

Extreme Right has managed a formula that sustained in an almost massive ignorance in the region, plants irrational fears that everybody buys as certain. An example that is illustrative of this is the famous phrase that affirms that "raising wages would cause employment fall", which means that they manage a system that can only function if the poor remain poor. However, everyone buys it and repeats it. Communism in the past decades and terrorism in the present, are banners that promoted by the extreme right produce exactly what they pretend to confront: social proposals different from theirs, and a constant terror that feeds itself for the benefit - only - of those who live on war and weapons production. The extreme right in the continent - history has the records - has produces in every country of the continent societies of visible contrast: some with everything, majorities with just enough.

 

Extreme Left, on its part, has delivered a similar phenomenon from the other side of the mirror. The shades are varied: from armed Cuban revolution, through movements that defeated dictatorships, to anachronic cases as that of Venezuela. The Left in Latin America has had the motive and the intention to improve equality but they have lacked the formula. A speech, most of the time populist, built by needs and rights deeply felt by all, has been void of the knowledge and the professional, administrative, political and diplomatic abilities to make their way through successfully in a world of confronting currents. The result has been conflict, isolation, stagnation or just lack of interest from the rest of the world. Here, history also has the records. One of the few cases when a progressive government has showed administrative and political ability is Brazil, also Chile, nations that have managed to grow basic variables and step into the global board. Tragedy in Latin America, in every government - left, center and right - has been and is embodied in a massive corruption at all levels that takes place just the same in every political tendency. Recent cases of corruption are not discovering water. Corrupt waters have systematically bathed the continent. That is also in the records.

 

But at this time of this world´s reality, when the world´s extreme right is using all its resources and devises - the formula - which impact the continent has tasted in its own flesh, Latin Americans must have grown and should be able to see its continent reality in a wiser way. It must find a Center of global vision, a professional, able center, free from old discourses, filled with professional men and women able to act for the continent with actions connected to the forceful reality of today´s world. In the world we are. Should they let themselves be dragged by extreme right terror that seeks to suppress progressive governments, or to make biased alliances that give born confrontations, or fall again in the Left belligerent populism void of practical progress, will only take the south continent to repeat its history or to keep stagnation, inertia resistant to change.

 

In this new era, and when new figures are surfacing in the continent, those old words "left" and "right" that have also been used to justify abuse from both sides, loose all meaning when the continent needs to identify its leaders - of different currents of thought, yes - but committed to the joint aim of getting its feet on Earth as a continent. Latin America must collect and support its best leaders - men and women - of every country and, respecting differences, ask them to - once and for all - leave behind the silliness of extremisms and ancient definitions, in order to make a unified Center where all inhabitants of these lands can live. Latin America must create now a Unique Vision of their Own, immune to be pushed around by extreme interests. A vision of the continent for the continent that, as such, would stand solid in The Americas, that land from Canada to La Patagonia filled with resources, ideas, technology and, above all, peoples sharing a feeling that transcends borders, nationalities or languages: the certainty of being able to work out a just world of their own.
